Soul sacrifice

OMFG. OMFG. OMFG. Like the 1970s, I don't think I think the 1960s was quite my decade to make things happen, but Santana's performance at Woodstock would have to be an exception. Since seeing this on TV for the first time at age 5, I have always believed that Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" was BY FAR the best performance of all of Woodstock 1969- sorry Jimi, Grateful Dead, Janis, The Who, Sly & his family, Jefferson Airplane, etc, but come on! Michael Shrieve was a baby lion; absolutely breathtaking, take no prisoners, and a definition of prodigy. Though I have a soft spot for drummers, he makes me want to be about 16 agaIn. Creepy.
I can't believe that it's been over 40 years!! Did anyone see the "History of Woodstock" on the History channel last summer? Damn good, huh?

The Germs

The Germs elude me. It does not make sense for them to have any success, with the simple chords and drunken slurring vocalist, and the fact that the band did not last too long and they could barely finish any stage performances. And yet, I like them! They were loud, crazy, fun, chaotic, and definitely so-cal punk. They were rubbing shoulders with some of my favorite bands: X, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, and Black Flag!
I never believed that the 1970s was a decade that I belonged in, but I would have not minded seeing these guys play live. Shows like The Germs are one of the rare things I call "fun", so if there is a new Germs band out there, let me know and I will come support you!
Sidenote: Watch all the YouTubes of the Decline of Western Civilization, obrigado. The director was a FEMALE (a pleasing fact since there are few out there) who goes by Penelope Spheeris. She also made the movie Suburbia!!!!! That movie is fucking...lovely, in so many words. As sick as this sounds, I love the part where the crazy dog eats the baby, which is the opening sequence. Flea, the bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is in it too!
I am moving to Los Angeles in the Fall, so films like Penelope's makes me feel better that I'm moving to the land of Starbucks and synthetic-you-name-it. Surburbaaaaaan hoooome!

This is what I call Romance...

For the past week I have been on one of my semi-annual rants of watching Fight Club repeatedly; I lick it up. I think this scene is by far one of the most romantic scenes to ever be created, and in such a unique way. And, very clever with the music choice. And that line "Trust me, everything's going to be fine... You met me at a very strange time in my life." Surreal, I'm totally cool with ending up like Marla.

2. Almost Famous- Directed by Cameron Crowe. Preaching Band-Aids. 2000
3. Ocean's 11- Directed by Steven Soderbergh. Every A-lister available appeared onscreen for this. 2001
4. Blow (no not the porno, but the Johnny Depp version thank you very much) - Directed by Ted Demme, his last film. "Danbury wasn't a prison, it was a crime school. I went in with a Bachelor of marijuana, came out with a Doctorate of cocaine." 2001
5. Vanilla Sky- Directed by Cameron Crowe. Mindfucking. 2001
6. The Ring- Directed by Gore Verbinski, a remake of Ringu. Parents, don't hit your kids, Samara will get you back. Just sayin'. She never sleeps! 2002
7. Old Boy- Directed by Park Chan-wook. One of the craziest movies, along with Suicide Club (2001, I'll throw that movie on the list as well), that I have ever seen! It is apart of the Vengeance Trilogy... all are must-sees, but remember that you need to have a strong stomach. TIED WITH Mystic River- Directed by my guy Clint Eastwood. Pretty grave subject matter. 2003

21. Little Miss Sunshine- Directed by Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris. Give me liberty or give me OLIVE. Can't touch this. 2006.
22. Superbad (2007, Greg Mottola) & Pineapple Express (2008, David Gordon Green). Both Seth Rogen, improvised, sadistic, absurd comedies of the beginning of the century. "I have a wife, she's getting out of jail soon, I want to fuck her- I want to have sex with her, I DON'T want to wake up murdered tomorrow!" et "The Iron Chef of Pounding Vag!"
23. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Cowardly Robert Ford- Directed by Andrew Dominik. Nailed it.
24.Let the Right One In- Directed by Tomas Alfredson. Those Swedes, they can be pretty twisted, eh? FACT: This truly is the only historically riveting vampire film EVER. 2008.

25. Burn After Reading (2008, the Coen Bros) & There Will Be Blood (2008, Paul Thomas Anderson). BOTH OUTSTANDING! Brad Pitt proves himself in actual talent instead of beauty and Daniel Day Lewis shows the world that you can't top his performance. DDL, call me dude!
